8 years and growing

The tree on the right is the large Live Oak in the backyard. It was planted probably when the house was moved here, we are guessing 60's timeframe. It has really done well in the last 15 years. When Roy moved in, there were only weeds in the backyard and not even many of those. Mostly it was dirt. The Live Oak was there but very canopy was very small.  He considered cutting it down and leaving the Pecan that was planted way too close to it.

Eight years ago, I gave some friends trees for the birth of their children. We also bought a tree that day.  It's the one on the left in this photo. When Roy planted it, he told me that he planted 40 feet away from the other tree because that's what he read.  He also told me that it would be 20 years before they even came close to touching.

This spring, while the trees were turning everything in our yard a beautiful shade of green pollen, I realized they were going to touch this year. Yes, it was going to happen. So I've been waiting and waiting for it to be official.  And at the end of April, it was. They touch. 12 years sooner than Roy thought.

I don't think that's a bad thing. I know he has a green thumb and is meticulous about watering and feeding the trees and plants in the yard. I water from time to time but ultimately that's his job now that I have Sy to take care of.

So kudos to Roy for his gardening.  The trees are growing together and will provide our back porch with some wonderful shade this summer.
