When I first started this blog, I highlighted going to Lowe's to build wooden toys on Saturday morning. We went a few times and then swimming started and since they only offered the program on Saturday mornings, we stopped going.
Sy remembered it and missed it. So I went online to see when they were having them at our store. They added a Sunday afternoon session and I find this to be a wonderful addition. I don't have to try to get up and rush out of the house on Saturday morning and usually we are in town on Sunday afternoons so it works out well. You can also register online and complete the waiver form and take it with you.
Come to think of it, the first kit we did was Jimmy Johnson's Nascar car. Sy loved that thing. Then we saw the car at SeaWorld and he was itching to drive it. I guess that started the Nascar bug with him. But I digress.
The kids get the safety glasses and apron - and a hammer to use in the session (it needs to be returned) - and when they are done, they get a certificate and a badge to put on their apron. It's very cute idea. The sessions are every other weekend and the toy they build is always different.
The pieces are pre-cut and have starter holes for the nails. You have to follow the directions and put it together in order. It's great practice for school and life for that matter. They take 30-40 minutes to do and it can get loud with the hammering going on. Once the hammering is done, then you put all the stickers on to decorate. See something for everyone.
This is when we made the Madagascar Helicopter.
This is the Madagascar Luxury Assault Vehicle.
We have been twice now this summer and we are planning on going back this weekend. We missed one because we were out of town.
This weekend is Kung Fu Panda Stacking Friends.
You sign up here - http://www.lowesbuildandgrow.com/pages/default.aspx. You can see what stores are close by, register, provide the information for the waiver, print it and take it with you. Ask at the service desk where they are having the session. Saturday morning is in the lumber area and Sunday afternoon is in the training room at our store. You would never know they were in there if you didn't ask.
It's free, provides entertainment, they get a TOY, and they learn about following instructions. So go build something together. You'll be glad you did.
