When Roy and I met one of our first full days together was spent at Rio Frio in Concan. We tubed the Frio from the 2nd crossing below Garner State Park to Neal's swimming hole. It was so fun and the scenery was fantastic. I had never seen a place like it. And we literally had the river to ourselves. Something that doesn't happen on the Guadalupe or Comal.
This is FM127 heading North from Sabinal. It's where you start entering the hills. It's exciting because you know you are getting close. And just like yesterday, you are usually behind other vehicles with the same mission in mind - take me to the river.
We finally hit the mountains!
In the last 15 years, we make an effort to get up there at least once a year. We put up our tubes for the last 6 years but hopefully Sy (and the river flow/level) will be ready for us next summer. For now, we hang out at Neal's swimming hole for the afternoon and enjoy the cold water on a hot summer day.
This year Sy was brave enough to climb up on the rock and jump from the top. Amazing. Last year, he would climb up on the back and jump from right there - which is at water level. It was great to see him go to the top. Roy even talked him into swimming on his own when he came up from the jump to the rock that made the water level about three feet. He was very proud of himself for doing it.
At the end of the afternoon, we head over to the Cafe for some good eats. The special has always been the same. Chicken Fried Steak. They changed out the salad to broccoli casserole but the steak is the same. It comes with fries, corn, casserole and a roll. A high carb dinner but hopefully we burned it off swimming before we got there.
They also have nice restrooms out back so you can get out of the wet suit and dry off before dinner and long ride home.
About 5 years ago, they covered the porch and added an extended deck over the canyon. It is so nice out there. I don't know why anyone eats inside. :-) Actually I've never eaten in the restaurant so I don't know the pros and cons. I just know that the water is cold and by the time your done, you are looking forward to sitting in a little bit of heat with a breeze and that's what the porch offers.

If you have never been - it's beautiful. If you have time come across Park Road 337. It's scenic and some parts are just plain scary but our ranch is out there. You'll know it when you see it. It has the live water and large pond.
Neal's is very family orientated and I love the tall Cypress trees and granite rocks. It's so unique and so Texas. I guarantee you will fall in love with this little piece of heaven.
