Sy got some really cool paint brushes for Christmas. The paint and brush are one piece - wonderful. He was very excited to try his hand at painting. We started in the kitchen at the table and after about five pages, we moved to the garage and piece of scrap wood. Here is his masterpiece. He would like to thank Santa for this really fun present.
Art of another kind. We are lucky enough to have a winter garden in which we can grow those veggies that prefer the weather to not be so hot. The tomatoes were looking very sad after the hard freeze in early December. I do have a window full of green tomatoes we harvested just a few days ago, so I think the plants are still alive. Roy believes that if they are still alive, the 18 degree temp predicted on Saturday will do them in so we harvested. I can't wait for them to ripen.
The peas, which Sy and I eat right off the bush, are in full bloom. I am really hoping the freeze doesn't do these in because I can just taste the sweetness of the harvest. The flowers are typically white but these, as you can see, provided a wonderful change that just needed to be documented for historical purposes.
The cousins came to visit over New Years. They requested to shoot the pellet gun and the rockets. I didn't photos of them shooting the rockets we got them for Christmas because they were small and went really high in the air. As part of the rescue and recovery team, I needed to keep my eyes on the sky to track the estimated landing area and not be snapping photos. But I did get a picture of them shooting off the 2-liter soda bottles off the PVC rocket. We saw this built and used on The Old House on PBS in the Spring. It was so cool, we built ourselves one that afternoon. It was very inexpensive to build and a great way to teach your kids about physics. On a nice day this will definitely keep them occupied for hours. Just be aware, you have to add water to the 2-liter bottle and when it fires, you get sprayed.
The HEB on Potranco had the coolest flamingos in the garden area. I know how can a flamingo be cool? Well for starters, it isn't pink and for seconds, it rocks. That's pretty cool. I wanted one and I was so afraid they would be gone - but they weren't. Maybe everyone else didn't find them to be as cool as I did. Oh well. I'm really glad that Santa went to that store and brought me home a flamingo. We are still deciding on where it should go so while Roy was spray painting it with clear coat to protect it, it sat on the old metal table basking in the sun. Keeping an eye on the beautiful green tomatoes from the garden.
The llamas live next door. They are getting slim pickens when it comes to food. I think that Arturo is going to have to move them to the far pen where green grass awaits. In the meantime, they have snacked on the last green leaves of the holly bush next to their fence. They had been leaving them alone but with the scarcity of green stuff in their pen, it was too inviting to pass up.
The dark llama is the baby born the first weekend in June 2009. We just love this one. All the other babies (and boy does this couple know how to make babies) have looked just like Mama and Daddy. But this one was a great surprise. I didn't believe it was theirs until I saw it nursing with Mama.
It was wonderful to welcome in 2010 with such beautiful weather and in the company of the nephews. It was good to have them come visit. Sy was sad when they left and asked the next morning if I was sure they went home.
I hope that your 2010 came in in the same wonderful fashion.
