The thing is Roy has horrible toes. He said they are from the Eggbrecht side of the family. I don't know where they came from but his toes are sometimes the main focus of our day - I promise you. There is not a day that goes by when I don't hear about how bad his toes hurt. Mainly it's the big toes. He dropped an aquarium on one and a log on the other. Oops. He has calcium built up in the joints and injury arthritis. Sounds sexy, eh? Well it's not. The podiatrist said they could relieve some pain by chipping away at the calcium in the joints. Time off his feet - six weeks. Roy decided it sounded horrible and more painful than the status quo so here we are.
Saturday, the wonderful man I married, decided that we needed to spend 6 hours in the car going to stores, we didn't need to go to, in search of the perfect veggies for his garden. I am all into the garden but this over the top - has to be the perfect vegetable - is getting on my last nerve.
Anyway, after hours of being in the car - with a child that was an absolute trooper for the whole entire time - and we are 20 minutes from home - Roy decides that we have to MAKE ONE MORE STOP. Shoot me, please. I can't stand being in the car a minute longer. He goes in to Home Depot for a board. We have been to THREE Home Depots this very day but we have to stop at this particular one just for good measure. Sy and I waited in the car. He went in and while he was digging through the pile of wood (for the pefect specimen) a board fell on his big toe. Yes, you read that right folks, FELL on this toe. He came wobbling out of the store. Sy and I were out of the truck because I was letting Sy climb in the bed - something to do - we all needed a little exercise by this time. Roy was hobbling and had a funny look on his face, he told me what happened. I burst out laughing. I know I shouldn't laugh but it really was the perfect ending to a day in the CAR! He totally deserved a little pain.
At some point during the day, I got Sy a pack of gum. He likes gum, he chews it for about 10 minutes then throws it out for another piece. It's like chocolate without the calories for this child. He puts it in the wrapper when he's done, just like I taught him. But he's not that accurate. So Roy went to clean out the truck after we got home and was complaining about all the gum sticking out the wrappers in the back on the carpet. None was stuck in the carpet so it wasn't like there was damage done so to me, it was hysterical.
The next morning, I looked at his toe. I had ignored his requests to look at it Saturday night. Sunday morning, it looked terrible. It hit just below the cuticle. Between the toe and the first knuckle, it was BLACK. I think he's going to lose his toenail.
We are now into Sunday, January 17. Ya know what that means, we are going to the Monster Truck Show at the Alamdome. Yep, we are. We are taking Sy and Tadan. We have never been, we have no idea what to expect. We lucked out and found parking across the street but it's still a walk - about three blocks. Roy had to hobble all the way over and back. The good thing for him was our section was just as we came in the door so once we were in, there wasn't much walking to be done.
Have you ever been? First off, it wasn't that busy, I think that was because the Cowboys were getting beat that afternoon...
Well, the Air Force guys repelling down from the ceiling with the US Flag was really cool. Then the trucks come out really fast from under the stadium. It's super loud. They parade around and then they start competing. They have to go around the circle once or twice (I'm still not sure) and who ever gets the fastest time moves to the next round. I am not sure where the time was being kept, I never saw a stop watch working. They do this until someone wins. In between they have guys on quads come out and race around the track too. Not sure why, but they do. Then there is an intermission - it's just enough time to use the potty and grab a smoke.
After intermission, is the good part. It's freestyle. Each truck gets a turn at driving around the track and jumping over cars and going airborne and making donuts in the dirt. Some tip over, some catch on fire, some just have a really cool run. This was the best part and I believe that you could skip the whole first part and just show up at intermission and save yourself at least one race with a crowd.
The boys loved the freestyle part. The trucks are cool and they are loud. Did I already mention that? We had popcorn, cotton candy, and nachos along with two bottles of water. $25.00, 3 hours later (and $10 for parking), we were leaving.
We told the boys we would take them to Alco to get a Hot Wheels Monster Truck for their toy collection. They both looked at the trucks and moved on. Tadan got an FA-22 plane and a tractor trailer that can haul his matchbox cars. Sy got a warthog plane and a dragster that goes fast when you push a button on the side.
It was a wonderful weekend. Tadan stayed over, we spent way too much time running errands, but I was successful in getting all my chores done - except working out - that one still aludes me - but you should see my bathroom - it sparkles.
