Spring Ramblings

The little guy was sick again. He started running a fever on Thursday night. We figured the strep throat was back. Roy took him on Friday. They ran all kinds of tests and nothing. He had a good day Saturday but then Saturday night, fever again and it stayed until the wee hours Monday morning. Sunday night was tough. High fever, pink bucket and our bed. So we decided he needed to go back to the dr. on Monday. His pediatrician got him right in and they ran a ton of tests again. Guess what? Nada. He didn't run a fever all day yesterday or through the night so he went back to school today much to his dismay. So glad that's over and I hope we are done with fevers, pink buckets, Tylenol and missed school days until next February.
Roy picked up some pretty flowers this past week and planted them near the walkway to the front door. They are so bright and cheery.
I noticed on the way home one night last week that the grass on the median and along the edge of the highway is turning green. It's a nice change from the dry brown it's been all winter. I am so excited for shorts, sunscreen and cute sandals. So excited, in fact, that I bought a fun pair of sandals at Payless over the weekend.

Roy worked very hard to get the roses trimmed and to clean out the planters. He did a great job and I provided very little help. I was mostly the "trimmed piece picker upper". I managed to not get scratched by all the thorns so it was good for both of us. His hard work paid off - doesn't this planter look good?

The sago's felt the winter freeze, that's why their leaves are brown. Soon enough the new leaves will appear and we will be out there trimming these off. I think the green "grass" around the planter is really weeds but I'll take the green for now.

You can see one of our compost bins at the middle left of this picture. This bin, one just like it behind the fish room, and a small black one at the edge of the backyard take most of our yard clippings. I am amazed at how many wheel barrels full of clippings you can put in these and a week later you can do it again. The small black one in the back yard takes most of the compost waste from the kitchen and bags of grass clippings from the mower. It's takes a lot of compost to make a small amount of soil, but it's really nice stuff when it's done.

You know it's spring when you see the kids outside throwing the ball. Little league has started. Tomorrow night we meet Sy's t-ball coach and find out what he needs for equipment and when practices are going to be. I hope he likes it. He can really hit the ball in the back yard, he throws kind of accurate and has not mastered catching. This should be interesting.

Soon we will have wild flowers, fruit trees in bloom, and hummingbirds.

While it's still cold and snowing in some places, I am glad to be in South Texas where spring comes early. The mornings and nights are cool and the days are warm. It's good stuff.
