Last Saturday night, for Valentine's Day, my husband took me to Luke for dinner. It worked out well because he had a fire meeting on Monday and it was a school night. I had heard about this restaurant from various friends and a write-up in the paper. Roy heard about it from one of his clients and decided we needed to try it.
So here's the low down. Parking. The restaurant is in the Embassy Suites at the corner of Houston and Soledad. There are few parking lots with a block or two for $10. Valet parking is $7 and street meter parking is $1.50 an hour until 6 - after 6 it's free. We opted to park at the meter and we walked about a block to get the the restaurant. We got there around 4:30 pm and we were thrilled to find out that happy hour was on until 6 - woo hoo. We ordered: a dozen raw oysters (for Roy), meat pies (to try), crab bisque, hamburger, fries, and shrimp with grits. Roy had a beer and I had a nice malbec wine.
Roy said the oysters were great. The meat pies were very good. The crust is interesting. It didn't get soft when cooked, it came out really crisp. The meat had a lot of flavor and a little spice. The crab bisque was okay. I don't think I would get it again. I am used to the Maryland crab bisque that has a cream base. This one is a rue base. I was going to get the gulf coast fish but the waiter said the fish was black drum. I passed. Roy thinks it was black drum because the weather had been so bad the boats couldn't go out. I decided to try the hamburger. The burger was HUGE and it came with caramelized onions and swiss cheese. I would have liked to try it with blue cheese. That would have been wonderful with those onions. The fries were fabulous! They have sea salt on them and were just so full of flavor. Yummy! Roy had the shrimp and grits. It was served in a little black pot and it didn't look like much, but it was very rich. I'm not a fan of grits but I tasted those and they were delicious. Needless to say, I did not finish my dinner and Roy just finished his. We were so full!
Our waiter needed some more work with the menu. He needed to taste more items so he could describe them better. He just re-told us what we read on the menu. And he moved around and mumbled when he answered questions. Then at the end of the meal, he pretty much forgot us. We enjoyed sitting for a little while, but he passed us up for about 30 minutes before he finally gave us the bill. They need to work on that too.
We heard that you can also eat upstairs. We didn't go up there but that is where the kitchen is so there a lots of servers and trays of food coming up and down the stair case at the one end of the restaurant. They have a very nice patio overlooking the River Walk. They had heaters set up for people who were out there but we opted to sit inside. They have a full wall of windows so we were able to look out and people watch.
We went to pick up Sy from G&G Sheetz and he was running a fever. Roy took him to the doctor on Monday and he was diagnosed with strep throat. He ran a temp on and off all they way to Thursday afternoon. And even today, 8 days later, he is in napping and still isn't eating well. It's been a LONG week with a sick little boy. I'm so glad that Nana and Tata were available to help out. He went to their house Tuesday - Thursday. Friday, he was home with daddy.
Roy called me at work on Thursday afternoon and asked if I would meet him for a drink. YES! Nana said she would keep Sy while we went out. We went back to Luke (smiley face). I texted Liz to see if she was over there because she works across the street (literally). She met us over there and she and Roy polished off four dozen oysters. I had shrimp in a cup - very spicy and very good! And I tried the cheesecake in a jar. Oh man, I am going to have dreams about that! It was not too sweet and very light. Absolutely perfect. We had a really good time and it was nice to go out again so soon after the last date night.
And then to top it off, he got me FLOWERS. He's wonderful.
As I mentioned, Sy is still not 100% but we are going to send him to school tomorrow. He was out all last week. I hope he does okay.
Roy is working on our taxes. We hope to get those to the accountant this week. I got a listing of the upcoming events and the circus is officially on there now. It hadn't been and I get a listing every month. I was also excited to see that Mary Poppins and Blue Man Group are coming to the Majestic. I am going to start saving pennies for those because we are going.
Overall, it was a good week. It was nice to have some time with my honey. It was even nicer to have a great place for Sy to go while he was sick and I had to work.
