We colored Easter eggs. First time since Sy joined our family. He really liked it. He has always played with food coloring in cups. He likes to mix them to see what colors he can makes. Ultimately, he winds up with dark purple or gray depending on the mix. I never thought to drop eggs in the water for him. Anyway, we did it last night. We did some plain primary colors and then he mixed them to see what he could make. What a mess! But he really enjoyed it and the eggs didn't look too bad. The funny part was that while he enjoyed coloring them, he does not like to eat them. Hard boiled eggs are not his thing. He likes to crack and peel them but he thought they tasted nasty. :-) Glad I don't mind them because it looks like I will be eating them this week.
The day turned out well. My mac and cheese turned out okay. I just made way too much. The ham was good - glad I figured that out years ago. Same with the green beans. Drop some ham drippings into the water and cook away. I'm not sure you can goof those up and they are so good! I have some for tomorrow's lunch.
Sandra brought 300 eggs for the kids to "find". They always have fun with that. They also went through 15 dozen cascarones. The back yard is full of confetti. It looks like NIOSA at the end of the night minus the trash and beer smell.
On a whim, I grabbed a sponge cake with fresh whip cream and black/raspberries and make a tart like dessert. (Roy and I had a "debate" in Central Market yesterday. I was going to buy cool whip to cover the sponge cake and set the berries in the cool whip. He had a fit and said "no way". I told him that real whip cream would separate and get running and it would be a mess. I showed him the tarts at the bakery and he agreed to custard. So I went to the custard aisle and they had this cool package of powder you mix into real whip cream and it won't separate. I got that and a container of whipping cream. Sy helped me mix it up this morning with some sugar and vanilla. We spread the cream on the sponge cake and then added the blackberries and raspberries.) It was really good. I will definitely be making that again. We also had ice cream with toppings. That is always good. Sandra brought yummy cupcakes too.
Yesterday to get ready, we scrubbed the back porch and got rid of a lot of Sy's old toys he doesn't play with anymore. We washed everything down to get rid of the shedding stuff from the oak tree. It looks really good out there. I also spray painted the two metal chairs from Big Mama and Big Papa's house. They didn't turn out great but they did look better than they did yesterday afternoon. One is black and one is green. We were using up the left over spray paint. At some point, I will need to get them back to the same color. I think they will need to be sandblasted before we paint them again. That's a few years off though.
Anyway, it was a very good day. Started off a little hectic and stressful but it all came together and it was nice to sit under the oak tree with the family.
Hope y'all had a good day too. As Sy said just a few minutes ago, we should have Easter or Christmas ever weekend, it's so much fun!
