We have Kildeer (pronounced Kildee) that come breed on our property every Spring. They build their nests on the ground and usually out in the open part of a field. We always worry we are going to run over the nest mowing. So far, I guess we have been successful because we have never seen a nest and there are always babies.
Today Roy decided that we would walk around the property and gather up trash. In doing this, we stumbled upon this site - in the middle of the field - at the edge of the pile Roy burned just before Easter. I'm glad we haven't mowed again, we definitely would have hit it due to its location.
Anyway, here it is. Mama and Daddy were having a fit we were close by. I'm sure they were very happy to see us move on. And then, I came back with the camera. For goodness gracious, leave the birds alone!
Four eggs - sitting out on the ground. They weren't hidden but they do blend in very well, don't you think? I'm glad Roy saw it and that Sy was on the other side of me or we may be talking about squished eggs right now.
Here are the parents, they are right at the edge of the grass in the middle of the picture. I was standing back from their nest which is in the front of the burned area below. Do they look nervous? They would not let me get closer than this to take a photo. While we were out there and I happened to have the camera, I got this one of the cactus coming into bloom. Roy cleaned our fence line so we don't have as many as we used to have but there are still some on the neighbor's side. They only have yellow flowers but there is an orange/pink flowering cactus as well.
The last of the Spring flowers are making their run. Our field was covered in Indian Paintbrushes and there are still a few that have not finished their cycle. I got this one down by the gate. I like this angle.
Hope you made some new discoveries on this glorious Sunday afternoon too.
