The New Crib

The chicks and ducks moved into their new place today. FINALLY! Roy has been working on this for a week. Sy and I helped with the staining portion and once that was done, we  just tried to stay out of the way. Table saws freak me out and I didn't want Sy distracting Roy while he was running it.

They really needed to get out of the smaller coop. As I mentioned before, they are stinky and messy and it was a small place for 6 growing peeps.  However, after a few minutes of being in this new coop, I realized they are going to be out of this in a few more weeks.  It looked huge until they got in there.

Anyway, here they are enjoying their new spot under the oak tree in the back yard.

Pretty cool, eh? We can't determine if Frito wants to be friends or eat them for dinner. Time will tell.

I was picturing something with a wooden next box off the side of the cage but Roy put the nest (roost) box in the cage. Not sure about that but the space is pretty nice seeing just our feathered friends are going to live here. (I believe it was built this nice because I heard rumblings of an iguana this winter. It's just a rumor right now.) The cage is built out of cedar, the fence post variety, and regular every day 2X4s. Wheels on the bottom to make moving it easier, a greenhouse panel for the roof and a spa for the ducks

Here are the peeps enjoying their new home.

The ducks got a spa. Roy made steps to make it easier for them to get in and out. When we first put them in the cage, we put them in water. They got out really fast. But then after about 30 minutes of checking the place out, the bigger duck got in and cleaned up. The little one hasn't gotten in it yet.

The wooden contraption at the far end of the coop is the nest box/roost. Needless to say, they are huddled in the opposite corner tonight and want nothing to do with the roost.

It's not noticeable this far away but there is a hummingbird (circled in black) checking out the peeps. He/She was getting a drink from the feeder and decided to take a look at who was in the new place. Jealous, I'm sure.
Can you see it now?

Anyway, I can't wait to check on them in the morning and hear all about their first night in the new place.
