Technologically Slow

I think I'm pretty quick to learn new things and I am confident that my skills using certain applications for computers aretop notch.  I am not afraid to ask how somebody did something or search the web on how do I ....  for what it is I need to know.

The fire department calls on me to help load software, fix the printer and work out kinks. That isn't saying much but I'm glad that so far I have not steered them wrong and I was successful at fixing some pretty big issues.

However, I was perplexed with the laptop at our house, which we got over a year ago.  I couldn't figure out how to make these little images work.  - The laptop at the office has them too - different make and model. Really? What is up with that and how the hell do they they work?

Can you see them? They are the volume keys. To the left of that there are keys for the DVD player too but I didn't take a photo of them. I googled "how do I work the volume via shortcut" for the home laptop make/model. I fiddled with all the F buttons below these graphics thinking they had something to do with it. I went into the control panel to try to set up shortcuts. Nothing worked. So I gave up and was using the very manual process of moving the arrow over the toolbar at the bottom of the screen, clicking on volume and changing it that way.

Well, I found out by accident last week that they work by touching them. Yes, that is correct, all you have to do is touch them. Mute/Volume Down/Volume Up - in that order left to right.

You can laugh now.
