The Building of a Fence

Those chickens and ducks need to roam around, hunt and gather, learn to live off the land, be further away from my house. And I don't want to worry that they didn't have enough to eat or ran out of water in the 100+ degree days that are our life right now.

Yesterday, being Saturday, we ran errands. The first one we knocked out was Tractor Supply in Castroville. Well, technically, it was second, we stopped at Haby's for kolaches - but they were out so we got bread, tortillas, a few donuts and an apple fritter. This is the third time Sy has been in there but he acted exactly like he did the first two times. As we are driving toward their location, I said, "Sy, the last two times you came here with me, you went crazy, jumping up and down, running around and not paying attention. I need you to not act like that today. Do you think you can do it?" Sy, "I did? Well, I won't act like that today." Me, "Good."

We got in there and he saw the decorated cookies at the far end and way down the other end were glazed donuts and then in the middle were scads of other fancy donuts, danishes, stolles and cakes. He got so excited, he started running from one end of the glass case to the other (it's long) and saying, "Mom, mom, mom, I want...." Over and over again. I pulled him over and said, "Please calm down. You are going to get a donut but you can't be running around and yelling, remember, you said you weren't going to do this." Sy, "But mom, did you see all the stuff they have?' I don't remember being like that at Gables but Haby's is at least three times the size of Gables and has three times the selection. Oh, it is a dream. He happily left with a glazed donut and a donut with sprinkles.

At Tractor Supply, we got 150' of chicken wire and stakes. The larger tub for the ducks wouldn't fit in the car with Sy in the back seat so Roy will have to fetch that once this project is done.

The stakes and chicken wire went with us to Walmart. Roy took Sy to McD's for chicken nuggets while I gathered school supplies and a few other items. I had the school supply list and the grocery list together in the cart. When I met up with them at McD's, Roy said he would load the car if I would stay with Sy while he finished lunch. I took him up on the offer.

Sy and I came out just as Roy was walking back from putting up the the cart. We drive over to HEB and I asked him for the grocery list. He said he hasn't seen it. I said it was on a HOT pink post it note, you didn't notice it? He said he did not. So, once we are parked, I look in the bags in the trunk to see if he threw it in there. Nope. It must have been in the cart and he didn't pick it up. So, I'm frazzled trying to remember what was on the list while Sy is saying, "Mom, can we get the cart with the seat? _ Mom, did you hear me? _ I want a cart with a seat." Roy is walking off in front of us trying to chase down a balloon for Sy. I find Sy the cart with the seat, I laugh at Roy trying to catch the balloon and still trying to remember what was on the list, I don't pay attention to where we are parked.

I wound up remembering most of the items on the list but a few were missed. I couldn't find the car when I came out so I went down the wrong aisle while Roy went to the liquor store.

We found the car, after walking up and down the wrong aisle with a cart full of groceries and Sy asking a million questions. While we were doing that, Roy got some great tequila and we got home safely.

After the bags were all in and put away, Roy laid out the plan for the pen and got the supplies together while I mowed the yard - or should I say the patches of the yard that are growing for some reason while the rest sits and dies in this drought and heat. When I was finished, I helped Roy with the stakes. We got 1/2 way done with pounding the posts into the ground. I had the measuring tape and the spacer bar, Roy pounded the stakes into the ground. I definitely got the easier job. Sy sang and danced around for us. He pretended to be a tap dancer and used the yard stick as his cane. It was really funny.

Today, Sy and I went to see Melissa, T and C and swim in the pool. Sy is doing great with his swimming. By that I mean, he is not afraid to go under water and he will jump in the deep end and get himself around to the edge. He still bends his knees too much and doesn't want to do the freestyle stroke, just dog paddling. It works and I'm not stressing about it.

We got home just before 5 and right as Roy was headed out to work on the fence. Sy gave up on us and stayed in the house to watch cartoons. We got all the stakes in and then Sy helped up roll the chicken coop over to it's new location. Roy wanted to put it on the trailer but the legs were too wide- 52" and the trailer was 48" so push and pull is what we did. I'm glad he put tires on it. By the end, he was wishing he put better tires on it.

He had a meeting to go to so I moved the water and food bowls over, picked up the stones the coop sits on and moved them via the wheelbarrow. They are waiting for Roy when he gets home. I can't pick up the coop by myself, way too heavy.

This week, we need to attach the fence wire to the stakes and get the new pool for the ducks. Roy is also going to build a ramp so they can us it to get in and out of the coop.

Sy has become addicted to Angry Birds. I played a ton of games on Friday night and got to the third level. Needless to say, he was impressed he got so far on the levels all by himself and I dreamed about popping people with pellets - Angry Bird style. While no one in my dream got hurt, I would advise against trying this in real life.

Overall, a great weekend. Hope yours was the same.
