For the bathroom, we wanted a door that would slide out from a pocket and resemble a shoji screen. We had no idea how to make this happen but in our quest for the right door, we found an awesome leftover that fit our needs.
The door came from Habitat for Humanity's Restore on Probant just south of downtown. It is a solid wood outside door that came from a home under construction. I believe we paid between $50 and $100 for it. When we got it, and for the next 5 years, it was in our house, the wood was raw and the paper on the glass sections was only 1/2 way done. Meaning, one side was completely covered but we never did the back side so when you looked at the door from inside the bathroom, you were looking at the back of the paper on the outside of the door.
Roy decided it was time to finish this project when he learned we were getting carpeting in the hallway after the holidays last year. He went right to work. Took down the door sanded it and then stained it to this almost black color. He then informed me that I needed to get more of the same exact paper we had on the door because it was perfect, five years later. No pressure there.
Herwick's here I come. I forgot the sample when I went but I was very excited to learn that after going through 800 paper samples, I had indeed selected the same exact paper. Phew. That was close. I bought three extra sheets to store in case we ever need to replace one or all of the sections.
